Dr. John C. Umhau

Medical Doctor | MD MPH CPE

I specialize in treating alcohol abuse disorder, and I give hope to those who find themselves loosing control over how much they drink.

Alcohol Use Disorder affects one in ten Americans, yet most are unware that medications can be an incredible help to people who want to drink less. The most effective treatment is adapted to the individual and recognizes the importance of psychological, social, dietary, medical, and spiritual aspects of recovery. As a physician, I employ the latest scientific knowledge to help people with non-addictive medications, effective counseling and nutritional supplementation.

For more than twenty years, I conducted clinical research on the treatment of alcohol use disorder at the National Institutes of Health. I am board certified in both Addiction Medicine and Preventive Medicine. In addition to my scientific and public health pursuits, I practice addiction medicine on limited basis with a community program in Virginia, and am a long time member of the Christian Medical and Dental Society and the Christian Community Health Fellowship. I completed a residency in Clinical Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, a MD at Wake Forest University, a MPH at Johns Hopkins University and a BS at Davidson College.

I adapt the most up to date evidenced-based medical treatment of alcohol use disorder to each persons situation, and use video tele-medicine to serve patients in California, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Texas and Maryland. I am accepting appointments through my website, AlcoholRecoveryMedicine.com, where I share how medicine and diet can help restore a life threatened by alcohol.
